North Country Beagle History

The North Country Beagle (also known as Northern Hound, Northern Beagle, Old Northern Beagle, Old Northern Hound, and Old English Beagle) is now an extinct breed. As it developed hundreds of years before records were common to be kept of dog breeding, there is little we know for sure about them and its certain ancestry has been lost to time.

What we can know for sure is that it's naive to the Yorkshire and Northumberland Regions of England and that it was one of the oldest hound breeds on the territory. There is a dispute between experts around the question of whether the breed developed exclusively from the ones from British territories or the predominant ancestors were imported by the Normans in the 11th century.

The current majority opinion is that the North Country Beagle was descended primarily from dogs imported from France by Norman Conquerors in 1066. The Normans, who were descendants of the Vikings and later assimilated to the inhabitants of the British isles came from territories that belong to France now. They brought a variety of hounds along such as the Saint Hubert Hound, the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, and the Talbot. The Saint Hubert Hound was developed and raised by the monks of  Saint Hubert’s Abbey in the Ardennes. Until around 900 AD it became a tradition for the Monks to send a group of Saint Hubert Hounds to the King of France every year as a tribute.  The King would then disperse these dogs to aristocracy across his Kingdom. The Norman nobles or their descendants, who came to possess these dogs brought them along to England.

Those who believe that the North Country Beagle was primarily descended from Norman dogs believe that the Normans crossed those French breeds which had accompanied them together and with a few native British Hounds and that’s how the North Country Beagle came into existence.

After the breed originated, it gained huge popularity spread throughout Wales and England and enjoyed it until the 18th -19th  century. Unfortunately, these fine animals got extinct around the turn of that century. The reason behind their extinction is thought to be their competition with the English Foxhound. As the English Foxhound served the same purpose and was an excellent scent dog just as the North Country Beagle, people started choosing the foxhounds over the beagles. They also kept breeding and using the English Foxhounds more for hunting which decreased the value of the North Country Beagles. Therefore, people decreased efforts of breeding this breed and increased using the foxhounds over them. This led to their deplorable disappearance.
