Segugio Italiano History

The Segugio Italiano, also known as the Segit is an ancient Italian scent-hound breed. The breed is believed to be descended from Egyptian hounds, that were brought to many cities, by Phoenician traders, that are considered today, parts of Italy. The dogs are thought to exist in their native land, for over 2000 years now. Moreover, there are several ancient art pieces, that strengthen this theory. Similar dog breeds have been immortalized in statues dating back to the pre-Roman era, portraying the Roman Goddess of Hunting, “Diana Scoccante L’arco” and “Diana Cacciatrice”, located in the Museum of Naples and in the Vatican Museum nowadays, respectively. In the province of Verona, multiple remains of dog shave been found, which were identical to these scent-hounds. There also was a painting from the 1600s, in the Borso d’Este castle, showing a hound identical to the Segugio Italiano we know today. Even though the breed’s exact history is shrouded in mystery, these artifacts and remains serve as evidence of the hound’s pervasive history in the Apennine Peninsula.

The fact that the breed was first brought to Italy by Phoenician traders, suggests that the Segugio Italiano is most likely a descendant of the Pharaoh Hound and other Middle Eastern breeds, for the reason being that, the two breed show many physical and behavioral similarities, nevertheless, the DNA evidence of their relationship is lacking. It is more likely that the breed was adopted by the Romans during their invasion of ancient France or Gaul, in the pre-Roman times.

Traditionally, the Segugio Italiano was hunting in very large packs, up to hundreds of individuals, and initially, the dogs had the instinct and will to capture and kill their prey in the hunter’s absence. Being scent hound, they were mostly used for hunting wild boar in the region. As breeders started to develop the breed, they introduced the Bloodhound, for the capability of tracking the prey and being more obedient during the hunt. Like many similar hunting breeds, the Segugio Italiano’s population numbers started to decline, drifting the breed on the edge of extinction, when the wild boar population decreased in the Italian countryside.

Thanks to the efforts of some dedicated hunting men, and the resilience of the breed, they managed to revitalize the breed, making them popular in their home country again. As breeders introduced Mastiff blood into the pedigree, the Segugio Italiano became a more versatile working breed, capable of working in smaller packs, or even individually, making the breed more desirable for individual hunters. Nowadays, the Segugio Italiano is mostly kept as a family pet, yet they are often seen hunting smaller game, like rabbits. However, they remain in rarity in the rest of the world, not a single one was registered in the United Kingdom for over 15 years now.
