Swedish Lapphund History

The Swedish Lapphund is thought to be the oldest native dog breed to Sweden, moreover it is presumed to be one of the ancient breeds in existence in the whole world. In some cultures, and myths, the breed is considered to be a descendant of the ancient, wild arctic wolf. The Swedish Lapphund was an important part of the indigenous Sami people’s tribe of Lapland, in the northern part of Norway, Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia. The breed was initially used as a hunting and guarding dog.

Later on, at some point in the 18th century, the Sami started to rely more on reindeer farming for their livelihoods, and the breed slowly began to show itself to be a capable pastoral breed, helping to guard and to herd the livestock. A unique characteristic of the Swedish Lapphund is the dogs’ usage of their vocal capabilities. It is presumed that the Sami tribes favoured the barking Lappies for two reasons: the reindeer knew the barking, they considered the dogs friends, not foes, and predators were deterred from coming too close or attacking the herds. The breed’s strikingly fox-like appearance, nevertheless its dark colouration, and it has the thick coat and bushy, curled tail common to all the Spitz breeds. Like other Nordic Spitz-types, including the Norwegian Elkhound and Finnish Lapphund, they can be traced back, using genetic studies, to a dog-wolf hybrid that developed in isolation to many of the other domesticated breeds.

The Swedish Lapphund was the first breed in Sweden to get registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, in 1893. Not long after that, in 1903 the Swedish Kennel Club had finally recognized the breed as a distinct one, separating them from the Finnish Lapphund, thus the Lappie finally earned official recognition. Despite of the breed’s early recognition, in the early 20th century, the Lappie’s numbers had decreased significantly, to the extent where the breed was believed to be on the brink of extinction by the 1930s. Then, a well-planned, strictly observed, and detailed breeding program had started with the intention of reviving the Swedish Lapphund. In 1944, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed. They also gained recognition by the UKC (United Kennel Club), in 2006. Unfortunately, this was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. Consequently, the breeding process was not in progress until the 1960s. Even though, it was quite successful in regenerating the breed population back in the 20th century, the Swedish Lapphund is currently experiencing another fallback.

Their registration numbers in Scandinavian Kennel Clubs are showing a significant fall-over in the recent decades. Nowadays, the breed is considered to be a part of Sweden’s national patrimony, honouring the dogs as their official national breed. Therefore, the future of the breed is still very uncertain. The Swedish Lapphund is recorded in the AKC’s (American Kennel Club) Foundation Stock Service, which means a step forward in their official registration. Today, the breed remained in extreme rarity, with an estimate of approximately just 1000-1200 specimens worldwide, with the majority of them based in Scandinavia.
