Basset Bleu de Gascogne History

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a very old breed that directly descended from an even older breed. The breed’s history can be traced back to the 14th century where he originated in the region of Gascony located in southwest France. The breed was created by crossing the Grand Bleu de Gascogne with other breeds. This larger scent hound breed has ancient roots. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne was too large to hunt the smaller game that hid in the underbrush, so the Basset Bleu de Gascogne was developed for the purpose of going into the thick underbrush to flush out tiny animals like rabbits.

The French Revolution in the late 18th century was very damaging to the population of most French hunting breeds, leading to the extinction of many. However, the short-legged Basset Bleu de Gascogne actually increased in popularity. This meant that more French hunters were able to use these dogs on foot rather than larger hounds. Eventually, the popularity of hunting with pack hounds diminished in France, and other breeds became more popular. By the beginning of the 20th century was almost extinct. There were very few to be found until Alain Bourbon began resurrecting the breed around the 1910s. Bourbon is credited with the continued existence of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne. He did not fully document his breeding practices and therefore, nobody knows exactly how he was able to revive the breed. One theory is that Bourbon was able to breed a few of the original Basset Bleu de Gascognes with the Grand Bleu de Gascognes and the Basset Saintongeious. Another theory is that the Basset Bleu de Gascogne simply came from a mutation of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne and both breeds are the same, except for the size.

Overall, the look of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne did change slightly in appearance and more closely resembled the stereotypical Basset Hound. The breed is a low stationed dog with thick bones. He should be agile and able to move quickly. He has a black nose with well-developed nostrils used for sniffing out the small game. He has long ears that are set low on his head and come to the end of his muzzle when extended forward. The breed also has a dense, short coat that is thick to protect him while in the underbrush. Moreover, the breed has survived but still remains very rare. It is one of the rarest breeds of French hound, both in France and abroad. The popularity gained by other Bassets such as the Basset Hound or the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has not come to the Basset Bleu de Gascogne. One of the few countries outside of France where the breed can be found is in the United States. While the breed has not gained American Kennel Club recognition, in 1991, it was recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale as well as the United Kennel Club.
