Gollie History

The Gollie is a designer dog breed, which came to the scene presumably during the 1980s. Although, it is possible that mixes, including the Gollie, were in existence as a result of natural mating through the decades. The trend of creating new hybrid breeds began around the middle of the 20th century. Even though both of the parent breeds have Scottish roots, it is believed that the first Gollie specimens were developed in North America and in Canada. Like most designer dogs, the Gollie gained instant popularity for the reason that they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of their parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of these designer breed’s ancestry, and the intention which led the breeder to create these dogs.

The Gollie, or in its other name the Golden Collie, is a result of cross-breeding either the Smooth or the Rough Collie with the placid Golden Retriever. The Gollie usually inherits a gentle and serene personality with a high tolerance for children. For the reason that there are not many multigenerational specimens among the Gollie population, the dogs’ size can differ from medium to large, and their coat type can also vary from golden to white, black, or brown. Moreover, Gollies tend to have a leaner body type than their Golden Retriever ancestor, thus this hybrid has a more athletic and daintier silhouette.

With the intention of having a deeper understanding of why breeders choose to mix these two breeds, we need to examine the parent breeds’ histories. Collies are originated from Scotland, where they were developed presumably during the 17th century. The breed was used as sheepdogs herding sheep and cattle on farms. As Queen Victoria visited the Scottish Highlands in 1860, she fell in love with the Collie. From that point on, the Collie was perceived not just as a simple farm dog, but as an elegant, royal animal. During the late 1800s, the breed was brought to the United States of America and got recognized by every major kennel club and organization. Later, in the 1950s, the breed became famous worldwide thanks to a television show for youngsters, called Lassie. Interestingly, the other parent breed, the Golden Retriever also finds its ancestry in Scotland. The breed is thought to be originated from the Flat-Coated Retriever and the Tweed Water Spaniel, mixed in with some Irish Setter at one point. During the early 19th century, the Golden Retriever was also used on farms as herding dogs, but the breed also excelled on the hunting fields, retrieving smaller to medium-sized game. One of the unique features of the Golden Retriever is that the breed while being used in the wet Scottish Highlands, developed water-repellent coats and webbed feet which helped them during the retrieval of waterfowl. After the Golden Retriever was brought to the United States of America, it became one of the most popular dog breeds of all time.

The Gollie has amazing parent breeds, regarding both their extensive histories and the fact that they are both loved by millions worldwide. However, the Gollie is far from this popular. Just like many other designer breeds, the Gollie has no breed standard yet, and they are not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs. Resembling other hybrids, the breed is registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Dog Registry of America, Inc., and the International Designer Canine Registry. The Gollie is a playful and sweet breed, like the Golden Retrievers while having the obedient nature and extraordinary intelligence of the Collie.
