Pungsan Dog History

The Pungsan dog (also known as the ‘Poongsan dog’)  is one of only three dog breeds native to Korea (the other breeds are the Sapsali and the Korean Jindo). The Pungsan is the rarest and least internationally known among them.  Although their exact origin story is quite shady due to the absence of records most of the researchers of the breed agree on that they developed in the mountains of North Korea as a hunting dog at some point during the Joseon dynasty, which lasted from 1392 until 1897. Some experts claim that they are the descendants of the Siberian Laika, according to others they are a mix of Mastiff and Herding breeds.  It was likely for the dogs in the area to mate with wolfs and according to some experts, Pungsans are the ultimate results of this.  Most of them explain their hunting ability, aggressive natures, and intelligence with wolf genes in their bloodline. What is known, is that this courageous dog would have been largely used for hunting large predators, legends even refer to a Pungsan dog who defeated a Siberian Tiger in battle but they would have also been kept for companionship and as guard dogs.

During the Japanese occupation in the first decades of the 20th century, their population decreased even though they were declared as a national treasure in 1942, because before that their warm and thick fur was prized as a material for fur coats for the Japanese military. After getting back its sovereignty the North Korean government forbidden the export of these dogs across the borders in order to protect the purity of and re-establish the breed, but these rules weren’t always followed, the breed could be seen in South Korea and in China as well.

In 2000 these dogs became diplomatic instruments when they were gifted from the president of North Korea (Kim Jong-il at the time ) to the president of South Korea (Kim Dae-Jung) at the inter- Korean summit. In return, Kim Jong-Il received two Jindo dogs, which are native in the South. The Pungsan dogs were male and female. In the beginning, they lived in the ‘Blue House’ in Seoul, (the official residence of the South Korean president) for a while and they were later moved to the zoo of Seoul where they gave birth to 15 puppies before both dying at age 13. These two dogs were accorded special status as guests of the state. They have been bred from and the lines produced are highly valued today but are not currently recognized by any major kennel clubs.
