Silken Windhound History

As a comparatively new breed, the history of the Silken Windhound is not a long one, but thanks to that we do have more exact information about how the breed formed. The first Silken Windhound litter was born in 1985 in the United States, though the breed was not named until 1998. The most committed pioneer of this breed’s creation was Francie Stull of Kristull Kennel, a Borzoi breeder who wanted to create a mid-sized, long, silky coated sighthound that would be easy to groom and maintain. For years, they had been searching for the perfect second breed for their Kristull Borzoi kennel and in 1975 they came to an agreement on the specifics of the new breed, and which breed is eligible to cross the Borzoi with. The Silken Windhound’s ancestors were Borzois and Whippets. After 1998 the first International Silken Windhound Society was established, and the Silken Windhound studbook was closed in 2000. As with all the other recognized breeds, The Silken Windhound is required to be DNA verified to be registered, so it has a complete DNA verified registry. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 2011, but the American Kennel Club still does not recognize it. Nowadays, the breed pops up in shows and performance competitions worldwide to popularize the Silken Windhound. The breed can be found throughout the United States and around the globe, including Canada, Japan, Africa, and Europe. While awaiting formal recognition by AKC and FCI, their easy training, and affectionate personality ensures that they can be found showing in conformation, coursing, racing, working as service dogs and in cancer detection, and living as loving family companions. Thanks to this breed’s personality and look The Silken Windhound will be a popular choice for those who want to combine family life and professional dog training in the future.
