Kunming Wolfdog History

The Kunming Wolfdog is also known as the Chinese Wolfdog or the Kunming dog, the Kunming Wolfdog is a relatively new breed that is an ideal working breed and family companion as well. It was first recognized as a breed in 1988. Intelligent, powerful, and alert, the breed thrives when it has a job to do, whether that is to protect its family or serve in the military as it was originally bred to do. The Kunming Wolfdog was developed in China for military use.

In the 1950s  the Chinese began their breeding program by breeding ten shepherd mix breeds together to create a dog that could facilitate the work of the soldiers and policemen with spotting bombs and mines. This breeding program started in Yunnan, and the first ten dogs were brought to the training facility in Beijing in 1953. Due to the lack of referential material  no one is quite sure what went into the breed. However, we know that firstly a lot of 10 and later more shepherds had been used as part of the K9 program. As these ten dogs were found insufficient for the immediate need, 50 suitable household dogs from Kunming were 'recruited' as well as 40 similar dogs from the city of Guiyang in Guizhou province and from East Germany as well to Beijing and got introduced to the program. Eventually 20 of these dogs, which were found the most appropriate for military use and seemed the strongest and most healthier ones were picked and formed the foundation of the Kunming Wolfdogs that we know today. This number further multiplied by breeding with 30 more canines added to the flock.

In 1988, the Kunming wolfdog was officially recognized as a breed by The Chinese Public Security Bureau and continues to be used in both military services and as civilian guard dogs. The breed is rare outside of China and also less commonly kept as pets, although they do make an excellent family dog, that is versatile, loyal, and loving to their own people while being reserved and alert towards strangers. They do tend to bond closely with one family member, but they are still a loyal and loving companion to everyone who resides in the homes.
