Small Greek Domestic Dog History

The Small Greek Domestic Dog is a descriptive name for this dog breed, which is more known as the Kokoni. The name derives from the word “kokoni” which means “little dog” in Greek. The breed’s origins can be traced back to Malta, to the times when the island was part of the Greek Empire. The Kokoni has been a part of the Greek lifestyle for approximately hundreds of years, alongside their larger cousins, the Alopekis. These two breeds were believed to be the different varieties of the same breed for a long time.

The Kokoni’s exact history is uncertain, due to the lack of knowledge, and records. However, vases, statues, pottery pieces, wall decorations, figurines, and coins represent and portray images with great resemblance to this breed. Consequently, the breed, for the most part, was exhibited as small and loyal companions for women and children, mostly for the upper classes in aristocracy, and among the nobility. The Small Greek Domestic Dog was both developed and used as a multipurpose dog throughout history, particularly for those with more modest means, and they proved effective as hunting dogs. They are excellent at helping to find, and capture small game, both birds and mammals, as well as ridding the barns and houses of pets, moreover, occasionally the dogs were helping herd livestock. Those unfortunate ones, who did not find a home, always managed to stay alive on the streets of Greece, as street dogs.

Because of the unrestricted breeding, the breed developed into an outstandingly healthy one compared to many breeds of its size, with no specific disorders that are more prevalent to their breed. The Small Greek Domestic Dog is very well-known in and around Greece, nonetheless, the breed has minimal representation outside of its native country. Moreover, the Kokoni is not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs. The breed gained recognition from the GKC (Greek Kennel Club). In today’s pop culture, not many Kokoni’s are featured, yet the breed was in the movie Bewitched from 2005, which was based on the television series also called Bewitched, which was on the air from 1964 to 1972.

Despite the fact, that we know very little about the breed’s history, and exact ancestry, the Small Greek Domestic Dog is outstanding among other breeds. The dogs are extremely adaptable to any environment. Moreover, the breed is significantly clever, making them extremely trainable for multiple different tasks, which makes them a first-rate candidate for any job from being on camera ass a dog actor even to being a therapy dog for children and for the elderly.
