Poodle History

The Poodle is considered to be one of the oldest breeds developed especially for hunting waterfowl. Many historians believe that the Poodle is originated from Germany, where the word “pudelin” refers to splashing water. Yet, it was developed into its own breed in France, consequently, the national dog of France is the Poodle.

The Poodle is a result of crossbreeding between several European waters and hunting dogs including the Hungarian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian water dogs. Other experts assume that the North-African Barbet is one of the Poodle’s ancestors, which was imported to the Iberian Peninsula. After this, the breed was exported to Gaul where the dogs were used as hunting companions. Many presuppositions girdle around the history of Poodles, from which one is that Poodles are descended from Asian herding dogs, and then traveled with the Germanic Goth and Ostrogoth tribes to eventually become a German water dog. Another theory suggests that the Poodle is descended from dogs that were brought out of the Asian steppes by the North African Berber conquerors and with the Moors, finally found their way into Portugal at the beginning of the 8th century. Whichever theory is correct about the Poodle’s ancestry, this breed is a very old one. Poodle-like illustrations were found in Egyptian and Roman tombs dating from the first centuries B.C. The drawings are very similar to the modern-day Poodle as we know them, portraying them as herding animals, retrieving game from marshes.

There are also debates around the Poodle’s size. Even though some might say that the Toy and Miniature Poodles emerged after the Standard, many experts believe the opposite. It wasn’t just until the 1400s that breeders started breeding smaller versions of the Poodle, in order to delight the Parisian bourgeoise. The smaller sizes Toy and Miniature were a result of breeding the smaller sized Poodles with each other, without mixing in another breed. The breed’s fine qualities allowed them to the lap of luxury. Elegant Poodles found its fanciers among the nobles of France and, eventually, all of Europe. The dog’s trainability and beautiful exterior made them a natural entertainer, that’s the reason why they were associated with the European circus tradition. Gypsies and traveling performers learned that Poodles are excellent at performing tricks and that they can be easily dressed in costumes, or their fur can be sculpted into fanciful shapes and colors to add to the dogs’ stage appeal. Not long after that, a trend grew out of this habit, wealthy patrons started decorating, clipping, and dying their dogs. Even today, this trend lives on at dog shows.

In 1874, the Kennel Club of England registered their first Poodle, after that the AKC (American Kennel Club), in 1886 done the same, because until World War II., Poodles were rare in the United States, but after the 1950s, the breed became the most popular breed in the country and held this position for another 20 years.
