Toy Trawler Spaniel History
The Toy Trawler Spaniel’s exact origins are mostly unknown. Another name for the breed back at that time was Miniature Trawler Spaniel. According to the experts, it was stated in 1919 that the breed was considered to be a descendant of the original curly-coated Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the old-fashioned also curly-coated Sussex Spaniel. In their exterior appearance, the breed was very similar to today’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but their skull was less domed, their coats were curlier and more profuse, and their ears were also longer.
The Toy Trawler Spaniel was considered to be a Spaniel breed, and it was indigenous to the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 20th century. The breed was small-to-medium-sized, and it was developed and raised primarily as sporting, guarding, and hunting dogs. Although originally, it is presumed that the breed was meant to be a sporting dog, it was really only used as a companion, show, and toy dog in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the Toy Trawler Spaniel was claimed to be an indigenous breed from the United Kingdom, by 1907, it was more well-known in other European countries including the Netherlands and Italy. They were more popular in the upper classes of the society, where the dogs served and intelligent and sweet-tempered companions.
A specimen of the breed named Robin was bred in 1911 by the famous tennis player and horse breeder named Lady Wentworth. Mrs. Wentworth’s dog was the only known specimen from the breed to be registered, for the reason that very few people owned Toy Trawler Spaniels. Robin died in 1920, and she is thought to be the one who is the preserved specimen at the Natural History Museum at Tring. After Robin’s death, the breed quickly got the brink of extinction in 1920. In one of Lady Wentworth’s books called “Toy Dogs and Their Ancestors Including the History and Management of Toy Spaniels Pekingese, Japanese and Pomeranians”, she wrote about using Toy Trawler Spaniels with the intention of reviving the breed. The book was published under the name of "Hon. Mrs. Neville Lytton" in 1911.
Despite every effort, the breed is considered to be extinct since 1920. The main reason for the breed’s extinction was the fact that very few people owned the dogs, thus it was hard for them at that time, to find each other. Moreover, in addition, these specimens were also used in crossbreeding with other spaniel breeds, with the aim of achieving some of their features into other off-springs.
