Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka History

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, or Bolonka for short, is a member of the Bichon group. It is a small companion, toy breed that is proven to be intensely loyal to its owners. The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka traces back its origins as far back as the early 18th century when King Louis IV. of France presented a small Maltese type of puppy as a gift to the Russian nobility. Later, more dogs, which are thought to be the earliest ancestors of the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, migrated to Russia with Napoleon’s army. At that time, the breed was known as the French Bolonka.

Russia was never known for its toy dog breeds, partly because of the harsh environmental effects and its economic need and demand for working breeds. Smaller breeds were considered superfluous and unnecessary, that is the reason why during the Soviet Era, under Stalin, virtually no breeds besides the working ones were allowed to be bred. In 1960, when Khrushchev came into power, restrictions of propagating toy breeds were lifted and the demand for these little companion breeds started to increase. During the Khrushchev Era, dogs were not imported to Russia, so breeds were developed by selections from the already existing pool genes corresponding to the Shi Tzus, French Bolognese, and Pekingese,  Lhasa Apsos, Toy Poodles as well as small, local fluffy dogs from the Moscow and Saint Petersburg area, where breeding was centralized at that time. The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka’s soft looping silky and curly coat was developed in response to and within the parameters of the scarcity and necessity of grooming products that one encountered living in a Communist State, especially in Russia. Breeders paid more attention to the breed’s social and behavioral development because it was a response to scarce housing and the growth of apartments, where keeping large working dogs was inconvenient and far from practical. However, in an effort to include some working capabilities into the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, a strong guardianship of its territory was instilled into the breed.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1991, the interest in the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka drastically declined and the breed was on the brink of extinction until after the Cold War. In the summer of 1997, a breed standard was confirmed by the RKF (Russian Kennel Federation).

Nowadays the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is gaining more popularity and the breed is being called the dog of the 21st century. Bolonki (which is the plural form of Bolonka) could be found now and then in the United States prior to 2002 when, after long negotiations and agreements with the RKF and the President of the National Russian Bolonka Club to honor and maintain the standard of its home country, Candace Mogavero of Fairyland Kennel imported the first puppy from Russia.
