Burgos Pointer History

Burgos Pointers have been used to hunt a variety of animals for over 500 years, firstly in the territory of Castile (central Spain), by native huntsmen. While they are nearly unknown outside of their homeland,(thus they are sometimes also called Spanish pointers) their beautiful good looks, mellow attitude, and wide-ranging hunting abilities may change that in the future.

The Burgos Pointer is a huge dog with a robust body that is neatly constructed and has a noble look with deep eyes. While they were bred to hunt, they make excellent house pets since they are easy to train and enjoy spending time indoors with people. These canines should only be kept in surroundings that allow them to spend time outside unrestrictedly. They would not be a beneficial addition to the family if there are already tiny animals in the house due to their intense prey drive.

The breed is thought to have originated in the sixteenth century. Despite the absence of records, it is usually assumed that the Pachón Navarro (a pointer) and the Sabueso Espaol (a scenting dog) were the breed's forerunners. Over the years, the Burgos Pointer is thought to have influenced the genetics of a number of European pointing dogs.

This type of hunting dog is best suited to a rural environment where it can roam freely. It used to be a larger dog, but over time it has slimmed down to a smaller dog that rises to its feet faster and tracks smaller games better. This breed was originally developed to hunt deer, but it is currently employed to hunt a wide range of wildlife, including birds, rabbits, and foxes. This breed isn't afraid to get its toes wet and will eagerly pursue its prey wherever it runs, on land, or in the water. They can also hunt and return, making them a desirable and adaptable hunting companion.

The Burgos Pointer was admitted into the UKC's Gun Dog group in 1996, and they are also recognized by the FCI's Continental Pointing Dog section. While they have gone perilously close to extinction in the past, they have seen a quiet resurgence in recent years and are now highly regarded in Spain, where they are still utilized for their intended purpose.
