Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie History
The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie is a medium-sized scent-hound breed, which can trace its ancestry back to France, to multiple hundred years ago. The breed is thought to be developed by mixing the English Foxhound with French hound breeds, most likely somewhere during the 16th century. The breed’s history is relatively rich and hidden deep in the French history because some experts claim that the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie could even be linked to the Saint Hubert’s hound project between 750 and 900 A.D.
Initially, breeders wanted to create a new hound breed with the intention of hunting more effectively for smaller games, like rabbits. In the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie’s name, the word “petite” translates to small in English, and it indicates the size of the game the dog was bred to hunt for, it does not refer to the breed’s actual size. First, they started the breeding process by crossing French hounds together, but the results were not good enough, so they added the English Foxhound too. Furthermore, the breeding mixture included other Anglo-French hound breeds such as the Beagle, the Petit Bleu de Gascogne, the Petit Gascon-Saintongeois, and the Poitevin. The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie was primarily used in the French hunting method, called “chasse-á-tir”, where the dogs had to work in small packs, or individually, to circle the smaller prey and chase it towards the waiting hunter men.
Before 1978 the breed was known under the name Petit Anglo-Français, the smallest of the Anglo-French hounds. However, this name was later changed when the breed standard got more precise and eventually finalized. First, the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie gained recognition in its native country, in France from the Société Centrale Canine (French Kennel Club). Internationally, the breed got registered in 1983 by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) within the organization’s scent-hound group. The UKC (United Kennel Club) also gave the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie recognition and classified them also as a Scent-hound. Despite the breed’s long and extensive history, and multiple recognitions, the AKC (American Kennel Club) did not recognize the breed yet.
Nowadays, even though that the Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie was exported to the United States of America and to other southern European countries, it remained in rarity outside of its native country, France, mainly for the reason that the breed is rarely kept exclusively as a show dog or simply as a family companion. The Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie is still used mostly as a hunting dog in France. Because of the rarity of the breed, it is extremely difficult to acquire an Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie puppy. The breed’s kennel clubs and renewed organizations are working on preserving the breed’s population numbers and it's overall breed standard while working on getting the breed more popular overseas too.
