Austrian Black and Tan Hound History

The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is a medium-sized hound breed that can trace its ancestry back to the early Celtic hounds from the early 19th century. The breed’s development is, for the most part, unknown due to the lack of documentation and records. Yet, it is certain that is was developed around the Austrian region of the Alps Mountains, after which the breed derives its name.

Most of the experts believe that the Austrian Black and Tan Hound is a descendant of the Celtic Hounds. However, another theory suggests that the breed is a result of the breeding processes of the monks of Saint Hubert’s monastery over 1,000 years ago. The third, yet most conceivable theory is that the Austrian Black and Tan Hound was developed using a wide variety of local German breeds, including the Hannover Hound and the German Pinscher over several centuries. The existence of the Austrian Black and Tan Hound was first recorded in 1884, yet it is also believed that the breed had been around for a lot longer than that.

Initially the Austrian Black and Tan Hound was developed with the intention of creating the ultimate hunting companion who is capable to work efficiently in the harsh environmental conditions and high altitudes of the mountains without failure. The breed has superb stamina, so it is keen to always be on the move, constantly working. The Austrian Black and Tan Hound were originally developed to hunt and pursue hare and rabbits, moreover, the breed had proven itself to be versatile enough to be able to track down larger prey such as deer or bears. The breed was primarily used for tracking wounded game in smaller packs, that were generally accompanied by one or two hunters on foot, rather than on horseback, due to the environmental conditions and terrain.

For the reason that the Austrian Black and Tan Hound was solely developed in order to pursue, track down and hunt, the breed is not usually recommended as a family companion, however, if trained properly, they can be excellent family pets. Despite their excellent hunting abilities, the Austrian Black and Tan Hound remain in rarity outside of its native land, Austria. The recognition for the breed came relatively late, in 2006, the UKC (United Kennel Club) recognized the Austrian Black and Tan Hound and classified them within their scent-hound group.
