Blue Picardy Spaniel History

The Blue Picardy Spaniel, also known as the Espagneul Bleu de Picardie, is a near relative of the Picardy Spaniel, English Setter, and Gordon Setter. They are descended from the French Spaniel, a hunting dog that originated in France in the 14th century and is the forefather of several kindred species.

In the early 1900s, hunting was popular in France, and English hunters would go across Picardy with their hunting dogs, many of them were Blue Belton English Setters and other nearly related British breeds. These dogs were frequently mated with the local French hunting Spaniels because they had to stay for months due to quarantine laws.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel got its name from the distinctive coat color generated by this cross. In their homeland, they are known as Epagneul Bleu de Picardie. Picardy is a region in northern France where the breed originated around the Somme River's mouth. Traditionally, these dogs hunted birds by flushing them out for the hunters to catch. Blue Picardy Spaniels may hunt in packs or alone, which is a desirable quality for hunters who do not have the financial means to own multiple dogs.

While the Blue Picardy Spaniel is usually seen in its native France, it has recently been transferred to nations like Canada and the United States. They are prized for their potential to make ideal household pets as well as their working aptitude in other countries. They are strong hunters with excellent scenting and retrieval skills however their webbed toes indicate that they were bred to be a water dog. The Blue lives up to his name, with blue-tinged skin, unlike other gundog breeds that have a brown tinge to their skin.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel was recognized as a distinct breed from the Picardy Spaniel in 1938, rather than just a fur coloration variety. Since 1996, the UKC has approved the Blue Picardy Spaniel into their gun dog group.
