Picardy Spaniel History

The Picardy Spaniel is considered to be one of the oldest spaniel breeds, with its origin which can be traced back to before the French Revolution. The French Spaniel, alongside the Picardy, is also among to earliest spaniel breeds, and these two are believed to have stemmed from the Chien d' Oysel described in the writings of Gaston Phoebus. The dogs were developed to be versatile, and thus the dogs were mainly used as a working dog and has the athletic body and weatherproof coat to prove it. Whether hunting in wetlands or wooded land, the Picardy Spaniel is known for the ease with which it expertly traverses a variety of terrains. The breed is both a retriever and a gun dog, it happily hunts a wide range of wildlife, including pheasant and snipe, as well as duck and rabbits.

Initially, the breed was bred in France, and with its noble history, it was mainly the royalty and the upper classes that worked and enjoyed the Picardy Spaniel, and the dogs and their human masters have been portrayed in beautiful artworks throughout centuries. The breed can be seen in paintings dating from this period by artists Alexandre-François Desportes and Jean-Baptiste Oudry. They were also the first breed of dog to be admitted into salons, thanks to their upper-class appearance and their upper-class fanciers. The breed’s place in society shifted significantly after the French Revolution when hunting was no longer restricted to the French nobility, so the dogs suddenly became accessible to all classes of people. During the early 19th century, British hunters crossed the La Manche channel with the intention of hunting in the grounds of northwest France. The British brought their own hunting dogs, and this resulted in a change of preference as French hunters switched to English breeds and caused a major blow to the existence of the Picardy Spaniel was crossbred with various British hunting breeds, like the English Setter in the mid-1800, which changed the appearance and the purpose of the existing breed and led to the development of the breed’s offspring, the Blue Picardy Spaniel.

While the breed was a popular choice of hunting companion in the past, with the importation of a large number of European, mostly British, hunting dogs in the early 20th century, the Picardy Spaniel began to fall out of fashion and their population size declined dramatically.

The Picardy Spaniel forms part of the Club des Espagneuls de Picardie et de Pont-Audemer, which was initially founded in 1921 along with two other breeds, the Blue Picardy Spaniel and the Pont-Audemer. The UKC (United Kennel Club) has recognized the breed within the Gun Dog category since 1996 and the breed also got accepted by the FCI later on, yet the AKC (American Kennel Club) did not yet recognize the Picardy Spaniel.
