Catalan Sheepdog History

Origins

As the name implies, the Catalan Sheepdog, also known as Perro De Pastor Catalán or Gos d’Atura Català, hails from Northeast Spain in Catalonia. Catalan Sheepdogs are regarded to be an ancient breed, resulting from the crossbreeding of the local Pyrenees and Catalan dogs with two different types of Roman dogs, one for herding cattle and the other for guarding them. The offspring of these dogs are thought to be the earliest ancestors of today’s Catalan Sheepdog as well as a variety of other similar breeds prevalent throughout the region. According to legend, Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and Emperor of the Romans from 800, was accompanied everywhere he went by his two large, long-haired black dogs. As tapestries from the 8th and 12th centuries show him with these dogs, many people believe that when Charlemagne moved southwards his two dogs mated with the local dogs and that the Catalan Sheepdogs are all descendants of those offspring.

The breed’s job

The Catalan Sheepdog is considered one of the most versatile dogs due to its extended history of use for a number of activities. The breed, like others in the region, such as the Great Pyrenees, was bred to guard and defend livestock. Some people argue that their guarding instinct is so strong that they will automatically guard flocks once introduced to the environment, and if they don’t have one, they will treat their home and family as such, maintaining a constant lookout for danger from the vantage point of their yard. It should come as no surprise that they make excellent watchdogs, but their general agility may surprise people. These dogs immediately became popular in Spain because of their great intellect and overall flexibility, and they were even employed as both messengers and sentinels during the Spanish Civil War. It has been described in Spanish literature as having excellent herding abilities as well as the courage to serve as an outstanding guard dog. Moreover, despite their ponderous appearance, they are actually highly athletic and often do quite well with skills and agility training. They are also known for being excellent show dogs due to their surprisingly simple training. Unlike some of its regional relatives, they are much more social and are more prone to create close ties with their families.

Decline and resurrection

Unfortunately, the number of dogs dropped substantially after the Second World War. Some were destroyed, others rarely bred. At that time, food and supplies became limited, and many owners were more concerned with survival than breeding. Furthermore, a lot of farms closed during the 1950s and 1960s, and people moved from the countryside to work in cities, reducing demand for the Catalan Sheepdog’s skills which resulted in just a few dogs being left. However, in 1970 a group of breeders got together to try and regenerate the breed. Shepherds were brought in with the remaining specimens and vigorous breeding began. Today, the Catalan Sheepdog is still considered an uncommon breed, but thanks to the efforts of committed breeders, the breed’s popularity are slowly but steadily increasing, and it is once again being used to drive and tend flocks.

Recognition

The Catalan Sheepdog was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2006 and by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in the Sheepdogs and Cattle dogs groups.
