Cierny Sery History
Even though that the Cierny Sery is a relatively newly developed breed, however, interestingly, its exact history is very uncertain because of the lack of records and documentation about the breed. Nonetheless, it is certain that the Cierny Sery, or in its other name, the Slovakian Black Sheepdog is originated from Slovakia, from Central Europe.
The process of creating the Cierny Sery started around the early 1980s, according to what most documents stated. Originally, the breed was developed to be a guarding dog for livestock and people. This naturally made them very protective and granted them extremely keen senses. It was said that the Cierny Sery could even take on a fight with a wild wolf or with a bear and easily win while protecting their fellow humans, or their livestock. It is thought that the Cierny Sery’s primary ancestor is the Altdeutsche Hütehund (Old German Sheepdog), however, some other documents state that this Slovak breed was actually developed by using Belgian Sheepdogs and mixing them with the Altdeutsche Hütehund. The uncertainty around the breed’s history is very significant, many other sources also suggested that the Cierny Sery’s DNA also contains some Schnauzer too. Presumably, the Giant Schnauzer was added to the mix with the intention of increasing the Cierny Sery’s size and also to add their signature solid, all-black appearance. Mrs. Zdena Seryova is one of the several breeders who is credited with the initial creation of the Cierny Sery.
For the reason that the Cierny Sery is very similar in appearance to the German Shepherd, it was not until the late 1980s, that the breed got officially distinguished from the German Shepherd, and from other shepherd breeds as well. The Cierny Sery also has some very differentiating wolf-like external features, especially resembling the Carpathian Wolf. Nevertheless, the Cierny Sery is really elegant, strong, athletic, and very balanced in appearance, besides being even-tempered too. The breed is especially known for its love of people and children. Speaking of the breed’s behavioral patterns, the Cierny Sery is believed to be one of the most sensitive dog breeds, they cannot be trained using harsh training methods, it is said that any trainer should treat these dogs as they were humans.
The Cierny Sery is rather a rare breed, for the reason that they are not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs, just registered by the SFKK (Slovenská Federácia Kynologických Klubov of the Slovak Republic) and the DRA (Dog Registry of America, Inc.). Moreover, another factor is that the German and even the Belgian Shepherd are much popular and spread over in the whole world, leaving little space for the Cierny Sery. Because of their rareness, it is not usual to see a Cierny Sery as a working dog, even though the breed was proved to be just as good police, bomb-detecting, service, or therapy dog as the German Shepherd.
