Gascon Saintongeois History
Gascon Saintongeois Origins
The Gascon Saintongeois is a rare breed from France and can be found in two sizes, the Grand and the Petit. The breed was originally used as a scent hound, hunting in packs. The Gascon Saintongeois is a direct descendant of the Hound of Saintonge, a now-extinct large hunting dog.
After the French Revolution, only three Saintongeois Hounds remained one female and two males. Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour of Chateau Virelade began crossing the remaining Saintongeois Hounds with the remaining Griffon Bleu de Gascogne from the Baron de Ruble’s kennel in the mid-19th century. The hounds were white with black ticking as a result of the experiment. Any puppies born that were not white were not used as foundation material for the new Gascon Saintongeois breed.
Further development
It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that the breed was divided into two sizes. Smaller hounds were needed by hunters in southwest France to hunt hare and other small wildlife, so they started breeding smaller Gascon Saintongeois and eventually began calling them Petit Gascon Saintongeois.
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois were the original size and they were used to hunt big wildlife like roe deer, wild boar, and grey wolf. The Saintongeois Hound is currently believed to be extinct, but the Gascon Saintngeois have inherited many of his characteristics. The Gascon Saintongeois has a highly developed sense of smell, is bold, and has a nice bark. It has become the ultimate companion to any hunter, but it also has all the essential qualities to play the role of a family dog. The breed also has a peaceful ad adaptable nature and normally perceives its owners as members of its pack.
Gascon Saintongeois Recognition
On the 10th of August in 1963, the Gascon Saintongeois was accepted by the Federation Cynologique Internationale. However, the official breed standard was not published until March of 2007. Since there was no documented standard, breeders were unable to breed to standards.
There were too many inconsistencies within the breed, therefore fans demanded the publication of an official breed standard. After the standard was published, breeders were able to begin breeding and making the breed much more uniform in appearance and personality. The Gascon Saintongeois was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1993.
