Goberian History

The Goberian is a new breed of dog that does not have a detailed history, however, the two breeds that were used to create the breed have long histories. The hybrid dog breed is a mix between the Golden Retriever and the Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky. Moreover, the Goberian is medium to large in size, averaging from 50 to 90 pounds. Dogs of the hybrid will often have blue eyes like those of Husky but are also seen with the Golden Retriever’s brown eyes. It is common for the Goberian to have a rounded head in proportion to his body and ears that hang down. His body will typically resemble that of a Golden Retriever while his legs and tail will appear more like that of a Husky. His double coat offers him protection against harsh weather and can be seen in black, white, brown, grey, cream, and golden.

Furthermore, as for the Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky parent, the breed was developed in Russia by an indigenous tribe known as the Chukchi. Originally, Siberian Huskies and their descendants were most likely utilized for hunting and pulling the sleds of the nomadic people with whom they shared their lives, which allowed for faster and farther travel. These canines were also developed for energy, endurance, and companionship and were an important part of the Chukchi tribe’s existence. As the tribe was isolated from the rest of the world, they were able to maintain the purity of their sled teams for many generations. Moreover, Siberians caught the attention of the public when they began winning sled races in the early 1900s, but they made headlines in 1925 when a legendary musher Leonhard Seppala led a relay of Siberian Huskies 658 miles in only 5 and a half days to rush a lifesaving serum to Nome, Alaska, where an epidemic of diphtheria had broken out. The so-called “serum run”, reported in newspapers around the world increased the popularity of the Siberians that hasn’t changed since. In 1930, the breed was also recognized by the American Kennel Club.

On the other hand, for many years people believed that Golden Retrievers descended from Russian sheepdogs purchased from a circus. In fact, the breed was developed in Scotland, on Sir Dudley Majoribanks’ highland estate, subsequently known as Lord Tweedmouth. Tweedmouth, like many gentries of his day, bred animals of all kinds, trying to perfect different breeds. It is important to highlight that he was an ardent waterfowl hunter whose reeding records, from 1835 to 1890, show what he was aiming for with the Golden: a talented retriever with a superb nose, who could be more attentive to his human hunting companion than the setters and spaniels used at the time for retrieving. He also wanted the dog to be loyal and even-tempered in the home. According to researchers, Tweedmouth had a yellow-coated retriever, Nous, who was taken to Scotland and at the end of the 19th century was bred to a Tweed Water Spaniel by the name of Belle, and four beautiful golden puppies were born. Tweed Water Spaniels, now extinct, were known for being eager retrievers in the hunting field and exceptionally calm and loyal in the home, characteristics which can be found in today’s Golden Retrievers. Furthermore, Nous and Belle’s descendants were bred with Wavy- and Flat-coated retrievers, another Tweed Water Spaniel, and a red setter. Tweedmouth kept mostly the yellow puppies to continue his breeding program and gave others away to friends and relatives. Not surprisingly, Tweedmouth’s breed first attracted attention for their skills in the hunting field. One of the most well-known was Don of Gerwyn, a liver-coated descendent of one of his dogs who won the International Gundog League trial in 1904. However when the Golden Retrievers were first registered at the Kennel Club, they were being called ‘Golden Flat-Coats’, and their name was only changed in 1911. They quickly gained popularity in the USA as well and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1932. Today, the Golden Retriever is the second most popular breed in the USA.

The Goberians’ overall behavior and attitude will vary depending on if they inherit more characteristics from the Golden Retriever side of the Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky side. Goberians are kind and well-tempered, just like the parents, easy to train than other breeds, and known for getting along with other dogs and kids. Thanks to their parents, they do not shed as much as other breeds, and can also be used as watchdogs.
