Goldador History

The Goldador is a relatively new hybrid dog breed, which was first developed approximately a decade ago during the early 21st century. The trend of creating new hybrid breeds started around the middle of the 20th century, in North America and in Canada, with crossbreeding purebred dogs with each other, in order to create new breeds. These hybrid dogs were an instant hit, because they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of the parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of these hybrid breed’s ancestry, and the intention which led the breeder to develop these dogs.

The Goldador is the result of cross-breeding the Labrador and the Golden Retriever, two of the most popular breeds of all times, especially in North America. These two parent breeds were usually kept together by breeders and hunters for a long time, because of their unique yet similar abilities and characteristics. Consequently, the accidental mating was inevitable, and sometimes hunters even crossed them on purpose, in order to create an even better breed for retrieving and hunting purposes. Both of the breed’s appeal is obvious, the Golden Retriever and the Labrador possess all the capabilities of a wonderful companion breed with the abilities and utilities of an effective working dog. This was the exact goal of the first official and planned cross-breed between these two parent breeds. Initially, breeders’ intention was to develop a very intelligent, highly trainable, socially active breed, who can excel in several different working and social roles, and who equally can be a perfect family companion.

Regarding the homogeneity and the consistency of the Goldadors, as opposed to the majority of the designer breeds, the Goldador puppies born in the same litter are very precisely predictable, both in behavioral characteristics and in physical appearances, thanks to the similarities between the parent breeds. It is even possible for the Goldador breeders to gain full homogeneity after crossing the first generation, thus multigenerational cross-breeding is not that prioritized, in contrast to many other hybrid breeds. Despite the homogeneity, and the possibility to draw up an early breed standard, the Goldador is not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs, however, breeders are constantly working on changing that, and gain full recognition for the Goldador.

Even though the Goldador is considered to be the perfect mix in its own category it is not that well-known in comparison with the Goldendoodles or the Labradoodles. Despite that, the Goldadors are thought to be very sought after by the various emergency agencies to fill in various roles including search and rescue, bomb-sniffing, police service, therapy, guide, and assistance for the physically or mentally disabled. Thus, the breed can be trained basically for every task. Moreover, the Goldadors, just like its parent breeds are considered to be excellent, loving, active, and loyal family companions, who can be trusted easily with little children too. The Goldadors can also be used as sporting dogs, they perform great at agility and obedience competitions.
