Old Croatian Sighthound History

The Old Croatian Sighthound, also known as the Old Bosnian Sighthound, is an extinct breed of sighthound from the Balkan countries of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The breed descended from the Old Bosnian Greyhound but the breed’s lineage also includes the Hungarian Greyhound, the Posavac Hound, the Istrian Hound, the Whippet, and the English Greyhound. However, it has been suggested that the Old Croatian Sighthound’s origin goes back to the 5th century BC as there are images of sighthounds on Celtic coins. Besides the coin, there are other references of the breed, found in the Balkans for example writings of friars from the 13 and 14th centuries AD.

The Old Croatian Sighthound was so similar, almost identical to the Greyhound (which was actually introduced to Britain by the Celts) although a little bit smaller, with dogs standing between 60 and 70 centimeters bitches being 5 to 10 centimeters shorter. The breed has a short coat and was predominantly white with black, brown, red, or yellow patches.

Traditionally the breed was used for coursing, predominantly hunting hare, it would catch the prey and then return it to its owner, the hunter. Just like on any other breed, the wars had a negative effect on the Old Croatian Sighthound. The breed was almost exterminated by war when Croatia was still a part of Yugoslavia as some were killed and some died because of food shortages.

The breed never actually received recognition by any kennel club and suffered greatly under the former Yugoslavia. However, the government did make the situation even worse because they banned coursing with sighthounds and further banned hunter from owning dogs without kennel club registration. In the late 20th century some remaining dogs were found in Orašj and the surrounding villages. A pair were even brought to the Zagreb School of Veterinary Medicine with some’s hope of saving them and starting a breeding program but unfortunately, the hope was gone and the plan did not work. According to research, the Old Croatian Sighthound went extinct by 1995.
