Pachon Navarro History

The Pachón Navarro first appeared in history, in Spain, at the beginning of the Middle Ages, in the 12th century when it was fashionable to develop various strains of hunting dogs around Europe. At that time, confusingly, the breed was referred to as the Old Spanish Pointer, which was a separate, but today is known to be an extinct breed. Intriguingly, the breed’s ancestor, the Old Spanish Pointer is believed to have shared DNA with the ancient and now also extinct Talbot Hound with roots dating back to the 12th century. The Pachón Navarro is a Spanish hunting dog breed from the community of Navarre, from the northern part of Spain. The breed reached peak popularity amongst the Spanish nobility between the 18th and 19th centuries. However, after the Spanish Civil War, their numbers declined dramatically to the point of dying out altogether.

In the early days of the breed’s existence, their breeders fancied the dog’s unique double nose, often referred to as looking down the business end of a double-barrel shotgun. There are no remains or documentation about how these early breeders developed this form of the dog’s nose. In the 1800's it was decided to divide the various breeds into groups, with a dedicated group of breeders and fanciers siding with the group of their interest.

In 1911 the breed was recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina, and later in 1922, the Pachón Navarro became officially recognized with the standard set for the breed. Unfortunately, by the 1950s the bred was on the edge of extinction when a virus called myxomatosis almost wiped the Pachón population completely out. The virus combined with the Spanish Civil War losses decimated the dog’s numbers. Yet, fortunately, a handful of remaining dogs were discovered in remote, rural villages. In 1979, well-planned and carefully controlled breeding efforts to recover the breed had begun with the contribution of these couple of dogs left. Today the Pachón Navarro is still in recovery mode and battling to secure its place amongst the many breeds of today. The aim is to promote the dog's growth without altering the breed, a noble and virtuous goal.

In 2010 the Pachón Navarro was added to the list of dog breeds recognized by the Spanish government as national dogs. It is one of five Basque breeds of dog, the others being the Basque Shepherd Dog, the Erbi Txakur, the Villano de Las Encartaciones, and the Villanuco de Las Encartaciones which display unusual characteristic, the split or bifid nose. Yet, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and other major international kennel clubs do not recognize the Pachón Navarro as a standardized breed.
