Pandikona Hunting Dog History
Just as the Bakharwal Dog and the Gaddi Kutta the Pandikona Hunting dog is also an old native Indian breed. Their origin story can be traced back to the Vijayanagar Empire and is now found predominantly in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, In these territories the air tends to be very dry and the precipitation is rare, but the Pandikona Hunting Dogs have perfectly adapted to these harsh conditions. They are strong and have the ability to resist disease and infection. They were named after the village Pandikona. The inhabitants of the village solved the predatorily feline problems by keeping these hunting hounds around for centuries. The Pandikona is considered a “primitive” type breed, meaning they have evolved their characteristics without the input of humanity. The locals most likely spotted the dog and used its existing characteristics without much breeding
Because of their hardiness and relative independence from humans, they are very self-reliant and need little care. They have a very strong instinct to protect their territories, so they are naturally taking on the guard duties in their owner’s homes even when they are away. However, they are very tolerant of children but can be aggressive with other dogs, with training that can make excellent companion dogs as well.
They are a rare dog breed and sadly expected to go extinct in the near future, because as it was already mentioned they only live in the Kurnool district of India where the locals are reluctant to give away or sell the puppies to anyone and aren’t convinced that the new owners will take good care of them. Some efforts are being made to popularize the breed but they do not have the brightest prospects at the moment.
The Pandikona Hunting Dog is not a recognized breed neither by the Indian, nor other international Kennel Clubs.
