Phu Quoc Ridgeback History

The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is the only native breed originating from Phu Quoc Island, province of Kien Giang, Vietnam. Their origins are still unknown however, some experts suggest that as a primitive breed, it is likely that they have existed there for centuries. According to some traditional local Vietnamese tales, the Phu Quoc Ridgebacks originate from a French ridgeback lost in the wild Island of Phu Quoc resulting in the breed’s transformation into wild dogs.

The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is believed to be a primitive hunting hound breed, used to hunt animals and fish. When people came to Phu Quoc island to live and work, they domesticated the wild dogs living in the nearby forests into working hounds. In the 1800s, the French were the first to classify the Phu Quoc Ridgeback is a separate type of breed. In 1897, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback appeared in the publications of Larrouse Encyclopedia and ‘Les Races de Chiens’ (the races of dogs). By the late 19th century, two dogs of the breed were brought to Europe and exhibited in dog shows. The breed was fancied among experts because of their unique coat which made them easily distinguishable from other breeds. There is a quite strange ridge of hair running along their spine on their backs. It is important to state that the only recognized breeds having a ridged coat are the Rhodesian Ridgeback of Africa and the Thai Ridgeback of Thailand besides the Phu Quoc Ridgeback with the same traits. That is why Phu Quoc Ridgebacks are usually compared to Thailand Ridgebacks. It has always been greatly disputed among experts whether or not these breeds are related or if this genetic mutation causing the strange allocation of hair, has simply occurred in various geographic locations.

After the Vietnamese War, the breed was on the edge of extinction and only numbered a few hundred on Phu Quoc Island, in Vietnam. With serious conservation efforts and a well-planned breeding program, their numbers increased to 700-800 purebreds in the past few decades. As of 2015, there are only a few thousand registered purebred Phu Quoc Ridgebacks existing worldwide. Because of that, the breed was awarded the Guinness Record for rareness among dog breeds. Visiting dog farms is considered one of the most exciting things to do in Phu Quoc for tourists nowadays. Due to the fact that there are not many of them currently, the breed is not able to enter many international dog shows, although, the breed, in 2013 won the Hanoi dog show.

In 2015, Catherine Lane was the first European to own and successfully breed Phu Quoc Ridgebacks. Ms. Lane traveled from the United Kingdom to Vietnam and then bringing two Phu Quoc Ridgebacks with her home. After some time, the dogs produced a litter, and each one of their puppies was sold at a price up to 10.000 English pounds. The Vietnamese Kennel Association is working on a specific breed standard in order to get the breed recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club)
