Rampur Greyhound History

The origin of the Rampur Greyhound can be traced back to several hundred years ago, originating in Northern India. The breed was originally developed to hunt large animals such as leopards, wild boar, panthers, lions, and tiger, especially for the purpose of hunting jackal. Traditionally used by the Maharajahs and the ruling nobility for hunting purposes, they were thought of as an elite animal. The Rampur Greyhound is considered to be one of the fastest dogs in the world and can reach a speed above 40 mph.

Ahmad Ali Khan of Rampur, the Nawab of Rampur state, from 1794 to 1840, was the first breeder to create these dogs by crossing Afghan Hound, or in other words, the Tazi and the English Greyhound. While the English Greyhound contributed its speed, behavior, and obedience, the Afghan Hound added strength, resistance, and bravery to the local climate. Rampur Greyhounds were primarily used for preying on animals for hunts or protection.

The Rampur Greyhound’s popularity decreased, in 1947, because the Maharajahs were not in power any longer. This change of power greatly influenced the breeding programs of the Rampur Greyhound. Many lines were mixed with English hounds which makes it difficult to find a purebred Rampur Greyhound today. Because of the changing times, dogs are no longer needed to hunt therefore the Rampur Greyhound is near extinction.

In 2005, in a nod to their national significance, the Rampur Greyhound was featured on an Indian postage stamp. Today, there are only a small number of Rampur Greyhounds registered within India, with rare reports of any internationally. Being extremely rare and largely unheard of outside of India, the Rampur Greyhound breed has no celebrated or popular members. Furthermore, the breed is still used for hunting, this dog has never really been a feature in show rings and is not typically kept as a pet.
