Ratonero Valenciano History

The Ratonero Valenciano, also known as the Gos Rater Valenciá or the Valencian Ratter. The breed can trace its origins back to Valencia, which is an Eastern region on the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain. The Ratonero Valenciano is believed to have existed since the 16th century. As their name suggests, the dogs were initially developed to work as hunting dogs, catching rats, vermin, and other rodents. It was originally a docked breed. The breed is one of the five native Spanish rat-hunting dog breeds. These five ratter breeds have a commonality of appearance and purpose, which suggests they hold distant relatives in common. One theory suggests that the origins of these breeds are both linked to Andalusia or to Valencia. In this respect, these game four-legged fellows could almost be described as the Southern equivalent of a Jack Russell terrier.

There are several theories around the breed’s exact origins, including either that stock from British Fox Terriers may have been introduced to native Spanish dogs, or that it is simply that crossbreeding different dogs for similar purposes, have led to similar DNA results. In appearance, the Ratonero Valenciano, is a little like a cross between a Fox Terrier a Jack Russel Terrier. It is also presumed that in the 16th century, in England, wine merchants took Fox Terrier type of dogs with them, while visiting the sherry regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Some of the dogs stayed and were bred with the local canines to produce dog types now known as the Spanish ratters, including the Valencian Ratter.

Even though the breed’s history goes back to several centuries, the breed officially got recognized much later in the 21st century. Since 2004, the Ratonero Valenciano is recognized by the RSCE (Real Sociedad Canina de Espagna), the national kennel club of Spain. The club used the structures and standards set out by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and placed the breed within the Terrier group. Nowadays, as of December 2010, there were only 563 Ratonero Valencianos registered with the RSCE. The dogs’ purpose did not change drastically over time, their owners are still occasionally using the breed as a working dog to hunt rabbits.
