Treeing Cur History

The term “cur dog” was commonly being used as a reference to a type of dog, who is without pedigree. Nowadays, the Cur type of dog is widely recognized as a group of purebreds. This group of breeds finds its origins in rural areas of the Southern States the United States. Due to the lack of documentation, and records, it is difficult to define the exact date of origin, yet presumably, the breed was developed around the beginning of the 20th century. These Cur dogs were bred for hunting purposes.

During the early 1960s, an enthusiast of the Cur breeds named, Rev. Phillips wrote an article about the Cur breed in one of the national hunting dg magazines, getting the word out by the breed and its qualities. First canine experts and hunters were not fond of the breeds, because of their exterior differences. None of the Cur breeds possessed the same exterior appearance regarding the color of their coats and other minor qualities. Yet, Rev. Phillips suggested the formation of an organization to preserve the breed’s DNA and to promote the breeds further. In 1967, the Treeing Tennessee Brindle Breeders Association was founded and was recognized as a legal entity by the State of Illinois. Back then, all the Cur breeds were grouped within this Association.

There is also a variety of them including the Treeing Cur, the Camus Cur of the Black Mouth Cur. Instead of standardizing their exterior appearance, breeders always aimed to enhance the breed’s performance and to develop them to be very versatile. The Treeing Cur is considered to be the most versatile of all types of Cur breeds. Initially, the breed was owned by the lower, not wealthiest parts of society. The Treeing Cur besides being an all-around hunter is a very good property guardian, and a stock herding dog, which makes them a great and ideal multi-purpose farm dog. Always being around their owners and other kinds of livestock, the Treeing Cur became very friendly towards people, thus the breed also makes a great family companion.

Regarding the dogs’ famous hunting capabilities, the Treeing Cur is not fussy, the breed pursues a huge variety of quarry, including possums, bobcats, squirrels, and occasionally, even bears. Their hunting ability is remarkable, it is paramount and more important to breeders than their general conformation, coat color, or appearance. This is the reason why there is a massive physical variation within the breeds. The Treeing Cur got its name after a hunting technique. The treeing technique uses dogs to force the prey to climb up into a tree and keeping the prey there until the hunter arrives. There is even an idiom, which comes from this type of hunting; “barking up the wrong tree”. The UKC (United Kennel Club) recognized the Treeing Cur in 1998, withing the scent-hound group. Most of the breed’s fanciers credit the breeders, Ray and Alex Kovac, as being the main forces behind the breed's recognition process.
