Bullboxer Pit History
The Bullboxer Pit is a designer dog breed, which emerged approximately during the 1990s, although it is possible that mixes, similar to the Bullboxer Pit, were in existence as a result of natural mating. The trend of creating new hybrid breeds started around the middle of the 20th century, in North America and in Canada, with crossbreeding purebred dogs with each other, with the intention of creating new breeds. These hybrid dogs were an instant hit because they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of the parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of these designer breed’s ancestry, and the intention which led the breeder to create these dogs.
According to researchers, the first Bullboxer Pit ever recorded, can trace its heritage back to a German dog breed called the Bullenbeisser, which is now extinct. However, in spite of that origin story, it is widely accepted that the Bullboxer Pit is a designer breed, which is a result of crossbreeding two purebred breeds. Consequently, the Bullboxer Pit, as its name already presents, is a mixed breed, which came to being after cross-breeding the American Pit Bull Terrier with the Boxer. The breed is also known under other names, such as American Bullboxer, and Pitoxer. In order to gain a better understanding of the reasons why breeders wanted to mix these two breeds, we should look at the two-parent breed’s histories. Both the Boxer and the American Pit Bull Terrier have long and extensive histories, and both of them are recognized by the major kennel clubs.
First of all, the Boxer was created in Germany during the early 19th century. The breed was developed by mixing Bulldogs imported from England with the now-extinct German Bullenbeisser, which was a Molosser-type breed known for its agility and strength. The breed was stabilized very early on, and the breed standard was drawn up in 1895, by three Germans, R. Hopner, Elard Konig, and Friedrich Robert. The Boxers were recognized very early by the AKC (American Kennel Club), in 1904. The Boxers were especially renewed after their work ethic, the breed was frequently employed during the First and the Second World War, as carriers of supply, messages, and ammunition to soldiers. Usually, after the war ended, soldiers brought their dogs home, thus the Boxers were seen as a part of the American military success. Regarding the other parent breed’s history, the American Pit Bull Terrier was originally developed to be used in blood sports, including bear and bull-baiting, the breed was also performing various tasks as capable farms dogs, such as herding the livestock, participating in hunting activities, and acting as a family companion. Even though the breed has a dark history, because of the fighting activities, the American Pit Bull Terrier became one of the most popular breeds in the world. The dogs are known to have great strength, stamina, and tenacity.
All in all, the Bullboxer Pit is the perfect combination of the two breeds, they make active, loyal, and protective family companions. However, socialization and obedience training must start at a very early age, in order to avoid any misbehavior from the Bullboxer Pit puppies. As other hybris breeds, the Bullboxer Pit is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America, Inc., and the International Designer Canine Registry.
