Toy Fox Terrier History

Terrier breeds have been documented in England as far as back as the 1500s. One of those breeds was the Smooth Fox Terrier developed to rout foxes from their dens during the hunt. The Smooth Fox Terrier was the largest contributor to the creation of the Toy Fox Terrier which was developed in the United States in the 1900s. It was created by breeding the Smooth Fox Terrier and several smaller breeds, which may have included the Toy Manchester Terrier, the Miniature Pinscher, and the Chihuahua. The idea of the Toy Fox Terrier came to those involved in breeding after the Smooth Fox Terrier litters had runts born in the group. The Smooth Fox Terrier has been brought over to the United States from the UK around the 1870s. By the early 1900s, the Smooth Fox Terrier was such a popular pet in America that the RCA Victor Co. chose the breed for its logo. However, not so much later the American farmers were in search of a “runt” or smaller animal to exterminate rodents and crossed the smaller Fox Terriers with toy dog breeds such as the Italian Greyhound, the Chihuahua, and the above mentioned in the early 20th century. This resulted in a smaller variety of the Smooth Fox Terrier with some notable differences, its fiery nature was slightly mellowed for example. Meanwhile, pet owners started loving this little Fox Terrier as an enjoyable little companion and excellent entertainer. The Toy Fox Terrier was first recognized and registered by the United Kennel Club in 1936. Then the National Toy Fox Terrier Association was founded in 1949 and they developed the breed’s standards. The American Toy Fox Terrier Club was also formed in 1994. However, the breed was only admitted into the American Kennel Club in 2003. Since then, the breed loves being the center of attention and they are often seen in TV commercials as well.
