American Pugabull History

The American Pugabull is a relatively new designer breed, which emerged after cross-breeding the Pug with the American Bulldog. These new hybrid breeds were developed between the 1980s and the 1990s, mostly originating from North America. Initially, breeders started crossing two or more purebred breeds with the intention of creating a new dog that would be smaller, or larger, healthier, occasionally non-shedding, hypoallergenic, or in some cases less wild. Consequently, breeders started to develop new breeds in order to adapt to the modern lifestyle and wants of new dog owners.

The American Pugabull is one of the greatest examples of these designer breeds. Its parent breeds have long and impressive lineages. On the one hand, the Pug is thought to be originated from China. Later, as they got more popular, the breed was imported to Europe, where it was often a member of royal households during the Victorian era. The Pug was depicted in paintings, figurines, and postcards. Their popularity did not decrease as time went by, nowadays the breed’s numbers are soaring. On the other hand, the American Bulldog was far from being a lapdog when it was first developed during the 17th century in the Southern States of the United States of America. This canine was initially known as the English White, mainly because of their white coats. The American Bulldog was created with the aim of developing an all-around guard and watchdog on farms and ranches. Later, as bull-baiting and dog-fighting became a popular sport, the American Bulldog was almost solely used for that purpose. Both of the parent breeds are recognized by most of the major kennel clubs, including the AKC (American Kennel Club), the UKC (United Kennel Club), and registered by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).

Due to the fact that the AKC does not accept non-pure-bred breeds, the American Pugabull does not qualify for a membership yet. Moreover, their physical appearance has not been standardized yet, for the reason that most of the American Pugabull puppies are first-generation ones. Being a first-generation puppy means that their parents are two purebred breeds. When this happens, many differently-looking puppies can be born out of the same litter. Breeders are currently working on establishing a breed standard for the American Pugabull, by crossing more second and third-generation puppies together, in order to make the breed more homogenous and more predictable in appearance. As with most of the established designer breeds, the DRA (Dog Registry of America) and the ACHC (American Canine Hybris Club) recognized the American Pugabull.

After breeders crossed the Pug with the American Bulldog, the result was the perfect mix of both of the parent breeds. The American Pugabull inherited the American Bulldog’s great temperament, which makes them good family companions, watchdogs, and guards. The Pug provided the American Pugabull their friendly, perky, and fun personalities. This combination made the American Pugabull an energetic, loyal, and friendly family pet. However, the American Pugabull is a relatively rare hybrid breed, with a little demand for them.
