Bordoodle History

The Bordoodle is a relatively new breed which is the result of crossing a Border Collie and a Poodle. As a hybrid dog, there is not much information on the origin of the breed. Even though there is no way to know when the Bordoodle developed exactly, we can say that it came about 20-30 years ago in the United States. However, if we take a look at the history of the parents, we will be able to understand where the Bordoodle comes from. It is easy to see why the original breeders decided to cross these two breeds as they are both considered to be among the most friendly, playful, and most importantly intelligent dogs in the world and the Bordoodle inherited some of the best qualities from both of their parents. Both parents, however, have a long venerable history.

One of the mean reasons why the Poodle is so often crossed with other breeds is because of their low-shedding coat, but it is not the only one. As mentioned before the Poodle can be traced all the way back to ancient times but was probably first bred in Germany. However, we tend to say that the Poodle originates from France as their history is long and complex. This type of breed became famous in France as a duck hunting dog with its woolly and curly coat that gave protection against the cold water. Later it developed its more distinct look when noble ladies wanted to carry around little dogs as pets and this brought about the breeding of Toy and Miniature Poodles.

Furthermore, when it comes to the other parent, the Border Collie, it is believed to be the grandmaster of herding dogs. It is origins go back to Northumberland along the English-Scottish border from about 300 years ago. The name “Border Collie” came from the very simple fact that the breed was developed on the border. Although these dogs didn’t become popular until the 19th century, they were loved by many people such as Queen Victoria because of their amazing herding abilities and intelligence. They were also strong, quick, easy to train and their gentle nature never scared the sheep. Afterward, the first time their name was used was around 1915 when James Reid, the secretary of the International Sheep Dog Society, named the breed in order to be able to register it next to the other Collie breeds. At the very end of the 20th century, the Border Collie was officially registered with the AKC.

Thanks to their parents, the Bordoodles have a very good temperament. They are suitable for almost any family as their Poodle side loves kids and the Border Collie side is very gentle. They are also very protective of the family and loyal. Overall the Border `Collie adds control, focus, and patience in order to balance out the bubbly hunting Poodle.
