Pomapoo History

The Pomapoo is a mixed dog breed originating from Pomeranian and a purebred Poodle">Toy Poodle. Through multigenerational crossbreeding, it is possible to have a Pomapoo with more or less than 50 percent of each parent breed in its heritage. However, to preserve genetic diversity, a lot of breeders decide to stop after the initial crossing, making the most of Pomapoos in existence first generation mixes. As previously mentioned, first-generation mixes can be a bit unpredictable. In the last two or three decades, these purebred mixes skyrocketed in popularity, leading to an increase in the Pomapoo’s numbers as well.

Regarding the parent breed’s history, the Poodle is the national dog of France, thus the Pomapoo has half its ancestry originating from France. In spite of this, the breed originated as a duck hunter in Germany. The Poodle’s development as a retrieving water dog began almost 400 years ago. Later then, in the early 20th century, the standard Poodle was bred down to the Toy or Miniature size as a city-dwelling companion dog. The Pomeranian was also bred to be a small-sized companion dog, and throughout history, they were frequent guests in the royals’, and nobles’ laps including; Mozart, Martin Luther, Newton, and Michelangelo. Therefore, the breed became more popular among the richer classes in society and Queen Victoria also became fond of the Pomeranian.

Even though the exact date and place of origin are still under debate, it is safe to state that breeders have been mixing the Poodle">Toy Poodle and the Pomeranian for over 20-25 years now in North America. Initially, designer breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds in order to eliminate the health risks and combine their best behavioral traits. Yet, no exact breeder officially claimed the rights of creating this breed.

Despite the purebred lineage, the Pomapoo is not yet recognized by any major kennel clubs and therefore, not eligible for registration and official pedigree papers, just like any other designer mixed breed nowadays.
