Taco Terrier History

The Taco Terrier or in its other name, the Toy Chisoxy is a hybrid breed. The breed is a result of crossbreeding two purebred dogs, the Toy Fox Terrier, and the Chihuahua. The name Taco Terrier is a reference to the little Chihuahua in the commercials of a fast-food chain restaurant named Taco Bell in the United States. The Taco Terrier is thought to be developed around the 1980s when the popularity of hybrid breeds started to increase significantly in the United States. Consequently, this is a relatively new breed, thus their history is short too. However, in order to understand the motive behind the creation of this hybrid breed, we need to examine the two parent breeds.

One of the Taco Terrier’s ancestors is the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is originated from Mexico, from sometimes around 3000 B.C., from the Techichi dog, which was an ancient Mesoamerican breed used during Toltec sacrificial ceremonies. According to the mythological documents, this little dog was serving as a guide in the afterlife for their families after they died. The modern Chihuahua, that we know today, was not common until the beginning of the 20th century when Spanish musician Xavier Cugat started to show his Chihuahua in his public appearances. The little dogs became popular in a short amount of time in the United States, and they have been owned by many celebrities too, including Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Madonna, and even Marilyn Monroe. The Chihuahua is recognized by most of the major kennel clubs including the AKC (American Kennel Club) since 1904.

The Toy Fox Terrier is the other parent breed of the Taco Terrier. The breed finds its origins in the United States, from the 1900s. The Italian Greyhound, Miniature Pinscher, Smooth Fox Terrier, and the Manchester Terrier are thought to be the predecessors of the Toy Fox Terrier. This Terrier breed was developed for the same reason as any other Terrier breeds; to chase and hunt foxes, and to control the rodent and vermin population around the farms. Toy Fox Terriers were also employed in circuses, performing tricks, and showcasing their agility capabilities. These tiny Terriers are very good jumpers, they can jump up to four feet high in the air. The Toy Fox Terrier, just like the Chihuahua also starred in many commercials around the globe. The AKC recognized the breed in 2003.

Breeders wanted to combine these two-parent breeds’ best abilities and traits, that is why they created the Taco Terrier. The breed almost instantly became popular among the Terrier community. The Taco Terrier fits into and can adapt to every lifestyle from the cities to the farms. The breed comes in several different colors, which is also compelling for future owners. They inherited the Chihuahua’s small physique, yet they are robust like other Terriers. Nowadays, they are mostly kept as family pets, but the breed is commonly showed at agility competitions. The Taco Terrier is ultimately a very intelligent and eager t please dog, that gets along very well with any animal or anyone. Despite its small size, the Taco Terrier is a great guard and watchdog. Just like any other new, hybrid breeds, the Taco Terrier is not recognized by the major kennel clubs yet.
