Doxle History

The Doxle is a new designer breed, which was created approximately 20 years ago, somewhere in North America. The trend of developing new hybrid breeds started around the middle of the 20th century, also in North America. Breeders started crossbreeding purebred dogs with each other, in order to develop new dogs, which better-suited people’s different lifestyles. These hybrid dogs became an instant success, thanks to the fact that they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of their parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of these hybrid breed’s history, and the intention which led the breeder to develop these dogs.

The Doxle is the result of mixing the Beagle with the Dachshund. Because the reason behind the Doxle’s creation is unknown, we need to examine the breed’s parent breeds in order to have an idea of what might have led breeders to cross them. For one part, the Beagle is a scent-hound, which can trace its ancestry back to ancient Roman times, all the way to 400 B.C. Romans brought the dogs to England, where it was bred further with local dogs. The Talbot Hounds, which were imported to England by William the Conqueror in 1066, are widely accepted to be the Beagle’s true ancestors. Breeders bred the Beagle to be a hunting companion, hunting for smaller game such as hare, rabbits, and foxes. For the other part, the Dachshund is also a hunting breed, originating from Germany. Their name derives from the badger, the prey the breed was bred to hunt. These little hunters were also included in the practices of hunting larger game in packs like wild boar, and deer. Later, during the 1800s, the Dachshunds became very popular, and people started to keep them as companion animals rather than hunting dogs. Both of the parent breeds have long histories with true pedigrees, and they are also registered with the major kennel clubs too.

Cross-breeding the Beagle and the Dachshund was pretty random and unique 20 years ago, for the reason that the breed’s sizes and physique are very different from each other. It is also known that while the Beagle comes in one size and color, the Dachshund can appear in two different sizes, with three different types of hair and in many different colors. For these reasons, every single Doxle puppy, even from the same litter, can look and act very differently, there is no consistency or homogeneity between the Doxle specimens. Due to this randomness, none of the major kennel clubs recognize the breed yet, but the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Breed Registry did register the Doxle.

Nowadays, the demand for these mixed puppies is increasing, yet the Doxle is not the most popular among them. This new hybrid canine is considered to be sweet, intelligent, good-natured, and even-tempered, consequently, the breed makes great family companions.
